Battle of the Bands - 70's Style!
I thought it would be a nice change to blog about something different. A change from politics, education and the mayoral system.
I love music, all types and genres. My ipod is my best friend! I listen to music whilst I'm at work or at the gym (when i go! thought I'd get that in before Nita does!) and at night with a glass of "vino collapso"
The rock bands of the 70's are right up my street and when Nita and kids are out, that's all that can be heard blaring out.
Bowie, The Who, Boston, Styx,The Eagles, Genesis, to name but a few, though there are many, many more and i had them all, GOOD TIMES!
I was interested to read a piece today that a lot of jealousy must have existed between the 70's super groups.
10cc rocker Graham Gouldman is disappointed his band is overshadowed by the success of rivals Queen and David Bowie - insisting they were just as prominent on the 1970s music scene.
The guitarist concedes it was the band's image and lack of leadership which has left them out of the music magazines and polls.
He says, "I'm not happy with our place in pop hierarchy. I think it should be more recognised.
"I was reading an old music magazine's article, Important Records From the Seventies, and we never seem to get mentioned in those things.
"It's always Bowie and Queen and that gets on my nerves a bit."
When you think about it he's bloody spot on! Who can forget art for art's sake, rubber bullets, I'm mandy fly me, the things we do for love, dreadlock holiday and probably the song that gets put on every single compilation record or now CD or to be really hip, download!
The three main men in 10cc were obviously Graham Gouldman, Kevin Godley and Lol Creme and they wrote some belting tunes not just for themselves but for loads of other bands as far back as the mid sixties. Are they right to be a bit annoyed? Should they be more acclaimed? What were your favourite rock bands of the 70's? How does the music from that decade compare to later years?
Let's have a light hearted debate on this one, y'know away from all the serious stuff! I'm a Dad in his mid 40's and i want to be liberated from my kids "smack yer bitch up" type of music! Help Me..............!!!!

Get rid of all black I pods.
Chuke them out.
Try Blackmores Night, fab music from fab musicians (Ritchie Blackmore and Candice Night)
Its got to be the Eagles, and AC/DC.
Their music lives on, although I am a 60s man and grew up with Zeppelin, the Beatles, the Who,Deep Purple,I have all of these on my mp3 player while I am at work.
Never realy rated 10CC,they were good but not in the class of the above.
Hey its nice to get away from politics for a bit, well done gang.
Was going to put something on the Sentinel webbsite, but they have all gone home, and shut the comments site down, lol, what a bunch of wallies.
Terry, you are always so polite.
Wallies isn't the "w" word I was thinking of......
Terry, Steady on dude my surname is Walley! cheers! lol
The Eagles class, class and more class! Oh and let's not forget the Moody Blues!
Let me just say, when Tony states he likes all types of music, that includes some very weird and wonderful stuff, ha ha. Well that's just great, I go out and on goes The Who, etc etc, but when Im in, I have to put up with Barbara Streisen (sorry to reveal that).
I will stick to my Coldplay, Killers, Fratellis, Kooks, thanks veryy much. Going back in time to the 70's, was I born then?? Oh sadly yes. Fantastic time for music, as T Cope, says AC/DC, Zeppelin, Deep Purple, all class.
Findo Gask loves the merseyside band Half Man Half Biscuit now the only two songs i can remember are "The Trumpton Riots" and "All I Want For Christmas Is A Dukla Prague Away Kit"
But then again it's a clear as it can be the old boy is as nutty as a fruit cake!
I'm with Nita on this one - give me (some) of the modern stuff instead of all that oldies stuff Tony's on about! Kooks, Fratelli's, the Fray, Wombats, etc. However, I just love Paul Weller's new album, but then, he was DEFINITELY my era - the Jam! Now that's what you call class music!
For a couple of middle aged women, our taste in music ain't that bad Nita! (sorry, should I have admitted that we are middled aged???)
Alison, totally with you on Paul Weller's new album, it is excellent. I'm also with you on the Jam, my era too. Then the good stuff came, in the late 70's, I remember wearing the black and white tops, Selector, Madness, The Specials, good times. One band I used to love was ELO. Wings was another one. Lets not forget one of my favourites, Abba. The list is endless isnt it. This makes a change from discussing politics.
Hey forget what nita says! I much prefer Kate Rusby to Babs!lol
Going back to the 70's though what about Supertramp, Santana, Rainbow and don't even get me going on the 70's disco scene. Now did i ever tell you about the time that nita dragged me off to see cliff bloody richard in concert.........................?
Rainbow!
At one time I had every album!
I got to meet Cosy Powell when he played with MSG at Hanley about 1980. Offered me a B&H and I said no, I don't smoke!! Mick schenker
was there, as was Gary Barden. What a great night.
Just rid the world of ripoff ipods, any mp3 player is far better. As for the 70's, yes some real good calls, dont know about Abba, but also what about the middel and late 70's punk bands. SLF, sex Pistols, Busscocks, Boomtown Rat. The Remones, Velvit Undergound, Iggy and the Stugges, all good bands. Tony dont do it man, Cliff Richards, nooooooooo, let me tell you women know nowt about music, just ask my wife, she'll tell you the 80's was the best, she mad.
Honest Warren the pillock didn't even sing live and the NEC was full of old biddies waving candles! It was a deal, she agreed to come and watch George Benson with me if i went to see cliff with her..... i think she got the best deal! I love the Sex Pistols! Johnny Rotten for Mayor of Stoke! lol
Warren, what is up with Cliff?? I can't believe Tony has revealed that one. Mind you, I did deserve it, after mentioning Barbara. I hate to admit, but I had two cliff CD's. I found them the other week, but Tony has probably made sure they found there way into the wheelie bin.
Now, we forgot about all those bands, Boomtown Rats, brilliant.
Whats up with Cliff, my life, more of whats right with the man, but I will admit I can beat Tonys guilty littel admision, I did once go to see..... wate for it..... Barry Manarlow, I kid you not, it was with my mother who was ill at the time (sadly no loger with us). It realy was a low point in my consert going. Even now, being old(ish) and haggered I still get myself to the V each year and to all the conserts I can, love it. As for Jonney for Mayor, sod that, the big big sell out, butter adds indeed, I say dig Sids old bones up, clone his DNA and vote him in, see what he can do. A few years ago I went to Orlando for a holaday, while I was there I went to the Hard Rock Valts. So there I'am t-shirt and Sex Pistols shorts on just talking rock music of all kinds with this yank who showed you round. He says to me'you know, if you dont tell everyone, I'll let you put on one of Sids leather bike Jackets' and he did, it was a real nice moment. As for new music, theres lots of good stuff around at the moment, try 30 Seconds to Mars for a bit of new punk, but going back to the 70's hears a name I dont think anyone as recalled, Bob Segar and the Silver Bullit Band, you want class its right there.
Barry? Don't think I'd admit to that one dude! But you are excused as you took your mum. The sid story is cool! V feet eh that's hip, just how old are you!
bob segar did he do hollywood nights? Did you rate Kansas?
Now I am jealous, I loved Barry Mannilow. I musn't have had much muscic taste in my younger years. Cliff and Barry, oh my god, that is just awful.
Tony would probably say I haven't changed any, my taste is still bad.
He's just not up with the modern stuff, but don't tell him I said that, ha ha.
How old am I, 45 on Tueseday, look a bit younger, somedays fell a lot older but never mind. I love Rock Music of all kinds, to me its a constant in my life, an ancer, that and film are the things what keeps me going, costs me a bloody fortune each time I walk in HMV, I just thank the lord downloads are cheep. I thought Kansas were OK, Boston to, but for real U.S. Rock, the afor mention Bob Sagar, The Eagels, Lennaord Skinard and the best live profomer I have ever see, Springsteen are the best. Now, and I will always say this, girls sould realy not comment on music, it dont count, back up on this one boys, good music meens mans music. Gat a lady on the subject and its always bound to involve Take That, Micky 'ruddy' Bolton, Cliff, Barry and some rot from the early 80's.Take my good lady wife, you know who her faverate is, Boy George, thats who, I'v been draged all round the place see him, even to the Vic Hall when I was frankly half dead, just before major heart surgary this year.I did enjoy it thought. Now to prove this point nita mentioned Abba, need I say more, dont get me started on Abba, its not nice, and it dose my health no good at all...lol
Hey Warren, what's wrong with a bit of Abba? You must be turning into an old git like Tony. Ha ha.
And what's all this about women not knowing much about music? I have some great music tastes (even if I say so myself!)
The Jam, Spear of Destiny, The Cure, Echo & the Bunnymen, New Order, Spandau Ballet, to name but a few from my college days. Later on, moved on to Robbie Williams (and Take That!), and now like a lot of the indie stuff, as I've mentioned before.
Unlike my old man, I don't really play much of the "old" stuff any more (he likes Slade, for god's sake!), it's the new stuff that keeps me young, driving to work in my car in the morning, singing my head off!!
I am an embarrassment to my kids, but who cares? I am forty something and I've lived enough not to care what anyone else thinks.
Sorry to hear you aren't too well Warren, hope you get better soon and keep posting!
Now I admit there Alison, you do indeed list some chacking bands. The Jam, Spear of Destiny( Libarters a classic song), Cure, New Order. Not realy into Echo and the Bunnymen, but never had a problem with them. Then you go a spoil it, Spandau Ballet, good greff, you'll be wheeling out Duran Duran next and saying Howard Jhones was good, just like the wife, and as for Abba, they can just stick right in my pipe, but saying thet the two blocks did wright One night In Bangkok for Murray Head,so they did go someway to redeem themselfs.
Slade, now thats bad, real bad. Mind you Reading, boiling hot summers day in 1985 and they played 'So Hear It Is, Merry Christmas' and stoll the show. That what music can do, mind you most of us were also draging on spliffs at the time as well, so that my have been part of the reason. As for my Health, I'v been in this state for over a year, geting use to it now, as long as I keep poping the tabs each day and dont start thowing myself around like I use to I'll be ok.All the bad habbits, well all but trumping have gone now.
Wozza,
Weller is a god whether it was with the jam, Style council or on his bill. Fave tracks Wilwood, Tales from the Riverbank! I love Santana, best album "inner secrets", saw the who at sheffield just before Entwhistle died. One of the best live gig was Moody Blues Bingley Hall 1977. I can go on and on and on! Music playing all day in the office and with a glass of wine in the connie at night, keeps you going!! Wozz hang in there bub!
